Seattle Seahawks
Just Drafted
Let's see what's going on with your Seattle Seahawks.

It is Super Bowl Sunday, which unfortunately, means Seattle Seahawks fans are forever condemned to relive one of the most iconic moments in Super Bowl history… which is simultaneously the single most painful memory in the entire history of Seattle sports: Russell Wilson throwing an interception at the goal line to Malcolm Butler to lose Super Bowl XLIX.
A decade later, this play still haunts the Pacific Northwest, and forever will. Yet with each passing year, we learn more and more about that fateful moment. Former Seahawks defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, who was on the sideline when the incident-in-question occurred, recently spoke about it to KIRO’s own Gee Scott on his radio program.
Mebane recalls seeing former Seahawks backup Tavaris Jackson reacting to the play call.
“So Tarvaris Jackson — I’m kind of not near him, but I can see him — has an earpiece in his ear, and they call the play. Tavaris Jackson says, ‘Nooo! Don’t run that play.’ He turns his back and walks up the sideline away from the play. And I’m like, ‘Where is he going, and why did he say don’t run that play?’ But he said don’t run that play. He walks back, and then they ran the play. And you know what happened after that.”
Initial reaction would certainly suggest blame lies at the hands of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who called the play. This is the position running back Marshawn Lynch certainly has.
However, Mebane appears to be offering a new explanation. While Bevell may have made the play call, clearly, there were audibles quarterback Russell Wilson was empowered to make at the line. This is what Mebane is alleging in his recent interview, that Wilson himself made the ultimate decision to throw the ball at the goal line.
“Russell pops up and said, ‘Man, they was in goal line (formation), that’s why I threw the ball.'” Mebane declared. “I said, ‘Oh, OK,’ and then I walked off. So, pretty much, Russell changed the play. It was one play. Russell changed the play to that play and then what happened happened.”
The play will live on in infamy, a memory the 12th Man will forever be cursed to relive (in some capacity) each February. As far as I can remember, this is the first time I recall a former teammate directly calling out Wilson with sole-ownership of the interception.
In the end, we may never know who is truly to blame, or if there even is one singular reason why it happened. What we do know is it ended the championship aspirations of the Legion of Boom, as the Seahawks have still yet to return to even the NFC Championship game… let alone the Super Bowl.
“I think about how close we were to winning the second one,” Mebane reminisces. “And I think we could have went to three. I think we could have gone to one in 2012 if (OLB) Chris Clemens didn’t get hurt. I think we’d have had a great opportunity to play in that Super Bowl.”

Could the Seahawks play in Ireland next season?
The Seattle Seahawks need to figure out what they are going to do with quarterback Geno Smith, who is entering the final year of his current contract. Head coach Mike Macdonald has been repeatedly on the record – including recently – that he wants Geno Smith back in Seattle for the 2025 season. As it stands, it appears the team will be making this a priority this offseason.
NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero are reporting the Seahawks will likely address Smith’s contract this offseason. As it stands, Smith will be headed into the final year of his current contract.
The #Seahawks and Geno Smith contract extension seems to be ramping up:

The Seahawks have said nothing to dissuade the impression they’re all-in on Geno Smith, who is entering a contract year at age 34 and is set to have his third offensive coordinator in three seasons. Seattle likely will address his deal, which is set to pay him $25 million in 2025, putting him at the lower end of the veteran starter pay scale.
I understand fully the frustrations some fans have with Smith, specifically his interceptions… notably in the red zone. However, Smith is still a clear-cut starting caliber quarterback in the NFL. If you believe the Seahawks can do better than him for 2025, I would merely ask this:
Who is out there that is both better than Geno Smith, and available to obtain?
It seems Seattle has asked both of these questions, and the answers they are finding keep leading them back to Smith.

Could the Seahawks play in Ireland next season?
The 2024 season officially concluded with the Philadelphia Eagles’ complete dismantling of the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl LIX. Which means it is now officially time to start focusing on the 2025 season! As 31 other fanbases got to watch Philly hoist the Lombardi on Sunday night, the itch to want to see their team do something similar next year in Santa Clara grew.
As such, ESPN is already giving everyone a taste of what is yet to come, with their “way too early” power rankings for 2025. ESPN did not just have power rankings for the league, they also asked their local writers covering each team to come up with three words to describe the team’s offseason goals. Clearly, all but one team this year ended their season without winning it all, so improvement is an obvious goal for all. But how to achieve it?
The Seahawks are squarely in the middle of these rankings at No. 15 overall, which seems fair. At times in 2024, Seattle looked like a cohesive unit that threatened to win the NFC West. But for the majority of the year, they showed plenty of reasons why they were not a playoff caliber team. A lot of growth must be made, yet the Seahawks will have to get creative with how they do it.
ESPN’s Brady Henderson chose these three words to describe Seattle’s offseason: “whom to pay?”
“Fifteen of their starters are either pending free agents (Ernest Jones IV, Jarran Reed, Laken Tomlinson), veterans who will want new deals (Geno Smith, DK Metcalf), 2022 draft picks who are eligible for extensions (Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, Kenneth Walker III, Abraham Lucas, Coby Bryant, Riq Woolen) or highly paid players who could conceivably be cut (Dre’Mont Jones, Tyler Lockett, Uchenna Nwosu, Noah Fant).”
The Seahawks are still $14ish million over the cap, even with freeing up an additional $14 million by restructuring Leonard Williams’ contract. Henderson is accurate in his assessment that finding a way to create the best team for 2025 will be more challenging than usual, given Seattle’s cap situation.
Whatever decisions the team will have to make, there are two clear priorities: signing linebacker Ernest Jones IV and giving quarterback Geno Smith an extension.

The Seattle Seahawks are currently scheduled to be $13.4 million over the 2025 salary cap, according to Over The Cap. That’s even after the team restructured Leonard Williams’ contract last week. General manager John Schneider must continue finding creative ways to get his Seahawks cap compliant before the new league year marks its arrival (March 12).
Releasing veteran players is one surefire way to create financial flexibility. One potential casualty is EDGE Uchenna Nwosu. Injuries have consistently prevented Nwosu from meeting the expectations of his three-year, $45 million contract. The pass rusher has appeared in just six games in consecutive seasons due to recurring injuries and setbacks.
If the Seahawks are going to release Nwosu, that decision could arrive before Friday (Feb. 14). Roughly $6 million of Nwosu’s $14.8 million base salary for 2025 becomes guaranteed on that deadline, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson. That injury guarantee will convert to a full guarantee if he remains on Seattle’s roster on 2/14.
Of Nwosu’s $14.8M base salary for ’25, $6M is currently guaranteed for injury only. If he’s still on the roster Feb. 14, the $6M becomes fully guaranteed. So if he’s going to be cut, that’s a natural deadline. And it is 2/14, per a copy of the contract I obtained. https://t.co/JCWuhSwxpz

The Seahawks have invested significant capital at pass rusher in recent years. They drafted Boye Mafe and Derick Hall in consecutive drafts. Both Mafe and Hall developed nicely in 2024. Dre’Mont Jones is also playing a full-time edge rushing position. Mike Macdonald’s defense is well prepared to part ways with Nwosu.
The Seahawks could save $14.6 million against the cap by designating Nwosu as a post-June cut, which would also lower the dead cap charge to $6.5 million.

One of the most positive developments from the Seattle Seahawks’ 2024 season was the emergence of Coby Bryant as a viable safety for this team. Bryant took the starting reigns this year and never looked back. The fourth round pick from the 2022 NFL draft had his breakout year, and has the Seahawks set up nicely at the safety position alongside Pro Bowler Julian Love.
It is always a good time to take a trip down (recent) memory lane and appreciate highlights. Specifically, all three of Bryant’s interceptions this year. In fact, all three interceptions snagged by Bryant were all the first three of his career!
On the year, Bryant finished with three interceptions, six passes defended, and 73 total tackles.

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider spoke to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday. There, he gave several updates about the team, including the retirement news of future Hall of Fame tackle Jason Peters – who has now hired in a Player Engagement role with the Seahawks.
But perhaps the biggest nugget of information Schneider shared was the fact Seattle will meet with quarterback Geno Smith’s agent to discuss a new extension. Smith will be entering into the final year of his current contract.
#Seahawks GM John Schneider at the NFL combine here in Indianapolis off podium to me, others on Geno Smith and his contract: “Yeah, we’re going to meet with him this week.
“We expect him to be our guy.” @thenewstribune

“We expect him to be our guy.” Yet another strong statement of support from a key figure in the Seahawks organization towards quarterback Geno Smith. Head coach Mike Macdonald has said repeatedly stated this offseason he expects Smith to be his quarterback in 2025, and new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak says Smith was a “big draw” in his decision to come to Seattle.
Geno Smith approached the team for an extension last year, and now Schneider is meeting with his agent to discuss one. Typically in the NFL, when two sides eagerly want something to happen, it usually gets done.
At this point, if Smith is not the Seahawks quarterback in 2025, it will be quite a surprise.
