A trade as big as the one the Dallas Mavericks made with the Los Angeles Lakers at this year’s NBA trade deadline doesn’t just come and go without long-lasting aftershocks, which are still being felt throughout the league and in Dallas in particular.
Fans have been protesting, general manager Nico Harrison has required beefed-up security for his own safety, season-ticket holders have been canceling, and now an assistant coach has jumped ship.
Marc Stein shared on X on Sunday that assistant coach Marko Milic has left the Mavericks’ coaching staff in the wake of the Doncic trade because, as Stein was told, he did not wish to stay with the Mavericks without Luka.
Marko Milić has left the Mavericks' coaching staff in the wake of the Luka Dončić trade, sources tell @TheSteinLine.
Milić was the first Slovenian to play in the NBA and, I'm told, did not wish to stay with the Luka-less Mavericks.

Milic was the first Slovenian to play in the NBA, so it’s understandable that he would feel hurt by the Doncic trade, especially since Doncic proudly represents their home country of Slovenia.
Milic played two seasons with the Phoenix Suns from 1997 to 1999, where he was teammates with current Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who brought him onto the coaching staff in 2022.
Doncic has expressed his shock at the trade, and everyone who follows the NBA feels the same way, as it was unexpected for everyone involved.
Losing Milic is collateral damage, and the Mavericks’ front office has to continue picking up the pieces of the damage left behind by such a seismic move.
Anthony Davis getting injured in his debut game didn’t help matters, but fortunately, for the safety of this franchise, he seems to be okay.

Dallas Mavericks fans are still reeling from one of the biggest NBA trades in the past decade, perhaps longer.
Luka Doncic went to the Los Angeles Lakers in a surprising move, with Anthony Davis heading to the Mavericks in return.
Fans weren’t necessarily upset to see the team make a trade for a player like Davis, but losing Donicic, the face of the franchise, was a deafening blow.
Davis looked fantastic in his debut with the Mavericks, putting up 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks, but left early due to a non-contact groin injury.
While there was some optimism that this injury wasn’t too serious, Shams Charania recently reported that Davis will be out for several weeks, perhaps as long as a month.

This is quite literally adding injury to insult, further frustrating Mavericks fans about the team’s decision to make this trade.
Fans were certainly vocal on social media, letting their feelings known about this unfortunate situation.
Good thing the Mavericks traded injury risk Luka Doncic for a player like Anthony Davis who never gets injured or misses time.
Nico Harrison and Patrick Dumpnt clearly know what’s best.

The roller coaster of having Anthony Davis you trade for him and he’s immediately unavailable. SMH.

Fans are reeling from this injury, and they’ve seemingly lost all hope in the front office.
This might have been a fluke in some respects, but considering Davis’ injury history, fans weren’t surprised to see the veteran fall in this manner.
It will be interesting to see how the Mavericks navigate the next few weeks without Davis, and if they’ll be able to stay focused and with their head above water.
The Mavericks currently hold the eighth-best record in the Western Conference, a position that’s now compromised with Davis on the sidelines.

The Dallas Mavericks are facing a significant setback just as Anthony Davis was beginning to make his mark with the team.
Reports suggest Davis could be sidelined for up to a month with a left adductor strain, an injury he sustained during his Dallas debut against the Houston Rockets.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Dallas, considering its previous struggles without Luka Doncic, having posted a disappointing 9-15 record when he was out this season before being traded.
ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst recently voiced serious concerns about the Mavericks’ competitive outlook going forward.
“It’s hard to look at them and say they’re going to be fine without Anthony Davis,” Windhorst said, via NBA on ESPN."It's hard to look at them and say they are going to be fine without Anthony Davis."@WindhorstESPN thinks the Mavs don’t have room for error without the All-Star big man. pic.twitter.com/KFAoLsj1qa

Davis’ stint with the Mavericks has already proven to be a roller-coaster ride.
After arriving in Dallas as part of the blockbuster trade, the big man was putting together an impressive performance before disaster struck.
His dominance was on full display as he posted 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in just 31 minutes.
However, the performance was cut short when he went down in the third quarter.
The injury situation in Dallas is becoming increasingly complicated.
While the team boasts one of the Western Conference’s deepest center rotations, its depth is being severely tested.
Derek Lively II’s extended absence due to a broken bone had already left the frontcourt thin, and Davis’ injury compounds the problem.
Though Daniel Gafford provides some relief, the spotlight now shifts to guard Kyrie Irving, who’s dealing with a disk issue in his back.
With Davis sidelined, Irving would become the offensive centerpiece, but the Mavericks can’t afford any more setbacks.

Kyrie Irving was given both bad and good news recently.
He was informed that his new teammate, Anthony Davis, is hurt and will be out for the foreseeable future.
But he was also told that he would replace Davis in the upcoming NBA All-Star Game, which is a huge honor.
Speaking to Joey Mistretta and the press, Klay Thompson talked about Irving being chosen to replace Davis.
“Kyrie is one of the best players of my generation. No question. The accolades, the resume is ridiculous. … You don’t become a nine-time All-Star by accident. That’s elite company. He inspires me and everyone else in this building, because he’s one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen,” Thompson said, per ClutchPoints.Mavs guard Klay Thompson on Kyrie Irving earning his 9th career All-Star selection:

As Thompson noted, Irving has been selected for the All-Star Game nine times now.
The last time he participated was in 2022-23, so it’s been a little while since he has been back.
Mavericks fans have seen what Irving can do, and he is still one of the smartest and most reliable floor generals in the league.
This season, Irving is averaging 24.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
The Mavericks are turning to him often, and they will be doing so even more now that Luka Doncic is gone.
And with the loss of Davis and the team’s other big men, Irving will have a lot on his shoulders.
But like Thompson said, he is one of the most professional stars in the league, so he is probably up to the task.
Irving will attempt to play even better and will inspire and ask more of his teammates, such as Thompson and others.
Whether it’s on an All-Star team or with his Mavericks, Irving elevates every squad he’s a part of.

Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks was looking and feeling great on Wednesday night.
While playing against the Golden State Warriors, Irving posted 42 points and seven rebounds.
As noted by Hoop Central, he went 15-of-25 from the field, 7-of-10 from the three-point line, and was 5-of-5 with his free throws.
Irving fans came out in full force to support their favorite star, saying that this game was a stark reminder of what a special player he is.

A lot of people said that Irving is an all-time great and isn’t appreciated in the ways he should be.
The number of people who feel he is one of the top point guards of all time is only growing, and he is viewed as a top-five PG by many.
Irving is 32 years old and likely has several years left in the tank, but some people are already fearful of the day he hangs up his jersey and retires, especially when he is still playing like this.
most underrated and disrespected all-time great. All the hate he gets, he'll be missed when he retires.

Is Irving being taken for granted?
A lot of people feel that he is one of the most consistent players in the league and isn’t respected like he should be.
Too many people have taken Kyrie for granted. This man continues to play at an elite level year after year.

Now that the Mavericks are without Luka Doncic, Irving will get more opportunities to lead and shine.
With more of the offensive responsibilities put on his shoulders, Irving fans are hoping they see him perform like this more often.
For the season, Irving is averaging 24.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, but it wouldn’t be a bit surprising to see those numbers rise as the season goes on.

The Los Angeles Lakers finally got a glimpse of Luka Doncic’s talents.
The former Dallas Mavericks star just had his best game as a Laker after a somewhat slow start to his tenure in Southern California.
He was more aggressive and more involved in the flow of the game.
With that in mind, former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers shared what he’s heard about Doncic from within the Lakers organization.
Talking on ESPN, he claimed that the Mavericks thought Doncic didn’t work hard, but that hasn’t been the case since he arrived in the City of Angels:
“A lot of the conversation out of Dallas when he got moved was he didn’t work hard. That’s not what I’m hearing from talking to them. He’s putting all the work in,” he said.Bob Myers on Luka:

Doncic’s eating and workout habits and work ethic have been doubted multiple times in the past.
That’s why fans and analysts believe he can benefit strongly from his new partnership with LeBron James, who famously spends $1 million a year on his body and has always made sure to stay in top shape.
Doncic is just 25 years old; he hasn’t even entered his physical prime yet.
He has more than enough time to develop strong habits and stay atop of his game for years to come, and if that happens, the rest of the league will be in a lot of trouble.
The Lakers surely hope that Doncic becomes the face of the franchise for the post-LeBron James era.
He needs to say healthy for that to be the case, and one could think of fewer better mentors for that than LeBron.
The Mavs might end up regretting this move sooner than expected.
