Analyst Believes Red Sox Are Making Smart Move With Garrett Crochet

The Boston Red Sox missed the postseason for the third consecutive year after finishing with a record of 81-81 and coming in third place in the American League East.

After winning the World Series in 2018, the Red Sox have only made the postseason one time, which resulted in a loss in the American League Championship Series.

The Red Sox appear to be trying to get back into their winning ways as they have made some key acquisitions this offseason to improve their pitching staff.

One big starting pitcher acquisition includes Garrett Crochet via trade from the Chicago White Sox.

MLB Analyst Jim Bowden revealed his thoughts on the Red Sox attempting to sign Crochet long-term now instead of waiting.

“I think Boston is doing the right thing, if you’re going to extend him, you got to do it now,” Bowden said via MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM.

Bowden mentions that if the Red Sox were to wait to attempt to extend Crochet, he could end up getting more than starting pitcher Max Fried did this offseason when he signed with the New York Yankees.

Fried signed with the Yankees for eight years worth $218 million, and Bowden thinks that if Crochet lives up to what people think he will, he could get even more than that.

Crochet came into the league with the White Sox in 2020 and has played all four seasons of his MLB career with the team.

In 2024 with the White Sox, Crochet started 32 games and held a record of 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA and 209 strikeouts in 146.0 innings pitched.

The Boston Red Sox missed the postseason for the third straight season after finishing with a record of 81-81 and third in the American League East.

After winning four World Series titles in a 15-season span, the Red Sox appear to have fallen off a bit as they have made the playoffs once since their last title in 2018.

The Red Sox won three straight AL East titles from 2016-18 but haven’t won the division since then, with their best finish being second in 2021.

While the Red Sox have hit a rough patch, they made some major acquisitions this offseason as they try to get back to their winning ways.

In addition, the Red Sox were voted to have the best farm system in the game by MLB executives.

According to MLB Pipeline, the Red Sox received 32 percent of the votes, finishing ahead of the AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays.

The Red Sox have one of the younger teams in MLB already, and their farm system gives fans even more hope that they will turn things around shortly.

Boston will have to beat out the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays if it wants to win another division title, but things appear to be trending in the right direction.

It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox call up some of their talented young prospects during the 2025 season.

The Boston Red Sox have fallen off over the past few seasons after winning the World Series in 2018.

Since then, they have made the postseason once and have missed the playoffs the past three seasons.

This offseason, the Red Sox have made some major moves to improve their pitching, adding starters Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, and reliever Aroldis Chapman.

With rumors swirling about the Red Sox adding a bat, MLB insider Jon Morosi revealed what he’s hearing regarding a possible trade.

“Boston is not the only team right now that [Nolan] Arenado is willing to waive that no-trade clause,” Morisi said, via MLB Network.
Nolan Arenado has reportedly been more "open minded" to waiving his no-trade clause to more teams in the last 24 hours, per @jonmorosi.#MLBNHotStove pic.twitter.com/AibevANjLl

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) January 9, 2025

It was previously reported that Arenado would only be willing to be traded to the Red Sox, but Morosi revealed that there could be more teams he’s willing to go to.

The veteran third baseman played eight seasons for the Colorado Rockies before going to the St. Louis Cardinals for the past four seasons.

The 33-year-old could be just what the Red Sox are looking for, but he reportedly could be willing to be traded to the Seattle Mariners or Detroit Tigers as well.

In 2024 with the Cardinals, Arenado played 152 games and batted .272 with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs and a .719 OPS.

Arenado proved that he still has the tools to perform and will be a name to watch to see if he gets moved before the 2025 season.

Analyst Names 3 Reasons Red Sox Fans Should Be Optimistic About Walker Buehler

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 30: Walker Buehler #21 of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitches during the ninth inning of Game Five of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on October 30, 2024 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

The Boston Red Sox have won four World Series titles since 2004 but have fallen off by missing the postseason the past three seasons.

After finishing with a record of 81-81 and third in the American League East, the Red Sox are making moves this offseason to get back to their winning ways.

They have acquired multiple notable starting pitchers including Garrett Crochet in a trade with the Chicago White Sox and Walker Buehler as a free agent from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Buehler’s 2024 numbers don’t jump off the page, but one MLB analyst said he believes Red Sox fans should be optimistic about the signing.

“Three reasons why Red Sox fans should be optimistic about Walker Buehler: 1. Renovated pitch mix; 2. Prove-it contracts work; 3. Postseason pedigree,” Paul Hembekides wrote on X.

— Paul Hembekides (Hembo) (@PaulHembo) January 8, 2025

The Red Sox gave Buehler a one-year deal worth $21 million for the 2025 season.

The veteran has begun throwing his off-speed pitches at a much higher rate while also performing well in the postseason.

In seven playoff starts in 2019 and 2020, he gave up six runs in 37.2 innings.

Buehler missed the 2023 season due to injury and got off to a rocky start in 2024 before figuring things out in the postseason.

In 2024 with the Dodgers, Buehler started 16 regular season games and was 1-6 with a 5.38 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 75.1 innings. In their run to the World Series title, he was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 15 innings.

The Red Sox could have found a gem with Buehler, and it will be intriguing to see how he performs in 2025.

Nolan Arenado Reportedly Has A ‘Preferred’ Destination

The Boston Red Sox missed the postseason for a third straight season after finishing third in the American League East with a record of 81-81.

Although the Red Sox have had a few rough seasons in a row, they are making some significant moves this offseason in an attempt to get back to a competitive level.

The Red Sox acquired starting pitcher Garrett Crochet in a trade with the Chicago White Sox and starting pitcher Walker Buehler as a free agent from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With some new and improved pieces in their rotation, the Red Sox could now be looking to add some offense, and one player is reportedly interested in joining them.

“The Red Sox are a preferred destination, if not the preferred destination, for Nolan Arenado,” Foul Territory wrote on X.

Arenado is a veteran third baseman who played eight seasons for the Colorado Rockies before going to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021.

In 2024, Arenado played 152 games and batted .272 with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs and a .719 OPS.

The Red Sox are known for the Green Monster in left field at Fenway Park, and adding a right-handed bat with some pop could be among their top priorities as the offseason progresses.

Although Arenado had 16 home runs last season, he has hit at least 34 home runs in six seasons.

The Red Sox will continue to be a team to keep an eye on as the offseason continues.
