A Dark Horse Candidate Has Emerged To Sign Pete Alonso

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for the fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth place in the National League Central.

While the Reds have not had much recent success, their young and talented roster gives the team hope for future seasons.

The Reds made several notable acquisitions this offseason, including trading for pitcher Brady Singer, second baseman Gavin Lux, catcher Jose Trevino, and pitcher Taylor Rogers.

While none of these players jump out as game-changers, the Reds could potentially be pursuing a free-agent first baseman who has yet to sign with a team for the 2025 season.

According to Jon Heyman, the Reds could develop as a dark horse Pete Alonso landing spot as his free agency drags on.

With the 2025 season right around the corner, Alonso’s free agency has yet to conclude, as his talks with the New York Mets have seemingly stalled.

Alonso joined the Mets in 2019 and has played with them for all six seasons of his MLB career.

In 2024, Alonso played in all 162 games, batting .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .788 OPS.

The Reds could use a power right-handed bat in their lineup to complement the speed of their star shortstop, Elly De La Cruz.

While most people likely think Alonso will end up going back to the Mets in 2025, the fact that a deal hasn’t been completed in this amount of time could give other teams a chance.

Report: Reds Tried To Trade For White Sox Veteran

The Cincinnati Reds are known for their star shortstop Elly De La Cruz, but the team overall hasn’t done well in recent years.

While the Reds have a talented roster, they missed the postseason for a fourth straight year in 2024 after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth in the National League Central.

This offseason, the Reds have acquired veteran players including pitcher Brady Singer, second baseman Gavin Lux, catcher Jose Trevino and outfielder Austin Hays.

They also reportedly tried to trade for another veteran player from the Chicago White Sox.

“The Reds worked with the White Sox on a Luis Robert Jr. trade before pivoting to Austin Hays, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon,” B/R Walk-Off wrote on X.

Robert has played all five seasons of his MLB career with the White Sox.

In 2024, he played in 100 games and batted .224 with 14 home runs, 35 RBIs and a .657 OPS.

Although Robert had a down year, he battled injuries and played for one of the worst teams in MLB history.

In 2023 with the White Sox, a healthy Robert played in 145 games and batted .264 with 38 home runs, 80 RBIs and an .857 OPS.

After the Reds weren’t able to come to a deal with the White Sox, they signed Hays away from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Hays is a downgrade from Robert, but the Reds likely avoided trading away multiple prospects to acquire the outfielder.

Insider Says 1 MLB Team Has Had A ‘Really Interesting’ Offseason

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for a fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth in the National League Central.

Since 2014, the Reds have made one postseason appearance, which came in 2020 when they were swept in the wild-card series.

While the Reds have not had recent success, their young and talented roster gives them hope for the future.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently revealed his thoughts on their offseason moves so far.

“The Reds have been really interesting, all offseason actually,” Rosenthal said, via Foul Territory.

Rosenthal speaks about the multiple moves the Reds have made, which he describes as “medium.”

Some of the acquisitions the Reds have made include trading for pitcher Brady Singer from the Kansas City Royals, second baseman Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and pitcher Taylor Rodgers from the San Francisco Giants.

Along with the trades, the Reds signed free agent outfielder Austin Hays from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rosenthal points out that these moves give the roster a more veteran feel, and they could be a good complement to their young and talented players, a group that includes one of the most electric young players in the game in shortstop Elly De La Cruz.

The Reds will try to win their first division title since 2012 and win their first World Series title since 1990.

The Cincinnati Reds have not fared well over the past several seasons as they have one playoff appearance since 2014.

Last year was another tough season as they finished with a record of 77-85 and fourth in the National League Central.

The Reds are hopeful that their young and talented roster can take the next step and get the team back to a competitive level in 2025.

This offseason, the Reds have added a few players, including starting pitcher Brady Singer, second baseman Gavin Lux and catcher Jose Trevino.

The Reds also recently added an outfielder to their roster.

“Reds, OF Austin Hays agree to deal, per multiple reports including MLB Network insider Jon Heyman,” MLB wrote on X.

Hays came into the league in 2017 with the Baltimore Orioles and was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2024 season.

In 2024 with the Orioles and Phillies, Hays played in 85 games and batted .255 with five home runs, 20 RBIs and a .699 OPS.

Although those numbers don’t jump off the page, he did hit double-digit home runs in three straight years with the Orioles, which suggests the power is there.

Hays failed to play more than 100 games for the first time since 2020, and if he can stay healthy, he should be an asset for this lineup.

The Reds are seeking their first NL Central title since 2012 and their first playoff appearance since 2020 as they prepare for the 2025 season.

The Cincinnati Reds missed the postseason for the fourth straight season after finishing with a record of 77-85 and coming in fourth place in the National League Central.

Although the Reds have struggled in recent years, their young core of players is still developing, and the team’s future appears bright.

One of those young players is shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who is only 23 years old and an electric five-tool player.

De La Cruz made an exciting announcement on social media on Monday.

“I’m excited to be on the cover of MLB the show 25,” De La Cruz said via B/R Walk-Off on ‘X.’

De La Cruz announced that he would be the newest player to appear on the cover of the MLB The Show video game.

Some other star players to appear on the cover of the game include Fernando Tatis Jr. in 2021, Shohei Ohtani in 2022, Jazz Chisholm Jr. in 2023, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2024.

De La Cruz came into the league with the Reds in 2023 and has played for the organization for both of his seasons in the MLB.

In 2024, De La Cruz played in 160 games where he batted .259 with 25 home runs, 76 RBIs, 67 stolen bases, and a .809 OPS.

The MLB took notice of De La Cruz’s electric speed as soon as he made his debut in 2023, and he led the entire league in stolen bases in 2024.

While the Reds have struggled as a group, their young players are talented, and it will be interesting to see if they make the next step in 2025.
